External member services

If you are a non-NHS employee or an NHS employee outside of the ‘BASE’ region you can apply for ‘external’ membership of BASE libraries at an annual cost of £50.

How do I join BASE libraries?

Register at your nearest BASE library or at the ‘Membership’ page on the top menu. Details of all the libraries in the BASE Consortium can be found under ‘Locations’ on the top menu. You will be given a BASE library card that entitles members to access the collections of all the libraries in the BASE consortium.

What can I borrow?

You can now borrow a total of ten standard loan items for four weeks from the BASE collection. Books sourced from libraries outside the ‘BASE’ area do not count towards your borrowing limit. You can reserve up to ten items including books from any library, overnight loans from your home library, equipment loans from your home library, multimedia loans (1 week, 2 week, 4 week or 8 week) from any library and multimedia overnight loans from your home library. Reserved items will automatically be sent to your home BASE library. You can renew an item three times without returning it, unless all copies are reserved. If you wish to borrow the item again, it should be made available to other members first for at least one week. Except where there are sufficient copies available in the library, at that time, for all members to use.

Advice on Information Skills E-learning

We can advise you on e-learning modules available on HEE e-learning for Healthcare.

Computing Facilities

Computing facilities are provided at many libraries in the BASE consortium, although not all permit access for those outside of the particular Trust. Please ask staff for information.

Literature Searches

Literature searches can be provided with references, allowing you to decide on the articles or documents you may wish to then source the full text version of. Information consultancy is also available. The literature search and information consultancy service can be provided for £100 for up to 2 hours, £200 for 2 to 4 hours and £250 for more than 4 hours.

Articles can be supplied for research and private study purposes, excluding any commercial purpose. Rules governing the supply of articles differ depending where the article is sourced from and whether you are an NHS employee or a non-NHS employee. You may be required to sign a copyright declaration. Articles can be provided for £15 each within 3 days or £30 each within 2 hours.

Information Literacy Training

Information literacy training can be provided for between £40 and £125 depending on your needs.

Please note: These services may be subject to local variations which could affect the range of services offered by a particular BASE Library at certain times.
